Symbolism

Symbolism flourished in Russian art at the turn of the century, when artists attempted to give visual expression to the mystical and the occult. Marked by intense religious feeling and an interest in the erotic and the perverse, the movement became a philosophy of life for many representatives of the Silver Age of Russian culture. One of the greatest masters of Russian Symbolism was Mikhail Vrubel.
