Bogdan Gottfried Willewalde

Painter, teacher. Studied under Karl Brullov and Alexander Gottlob Sauerweid at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1838–42). Foreign fellow of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1842–44). Painted battle paintings based on his own experiences accompanying the Russian army in Hungary (1849), Dobruja (1854), Sebastopole (1855), Caucasian War (1860) and the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78). Academician (1845), professor of battle-painting (1848), board member (1859), professor emeritus (1888). Taught at the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts and the Imperial Academy of Arts (1848–94). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1842). Contributed to the exhibitions of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1842–94), Travelling Academy Exhibitions (1886–89), Pan-Russian Exhibition in Moscow (1882) and the World Exhibitions in Paris (1867), Vienna (1873), Antwerp (1885) and Berlin (1886).
