Towel

The towel played an important role in national folk life and was a vital element in many traditional rites. A dowry often included dozens of towels; their quantity and quality indicated the bride’s financial position, talent and diligence. Towels were decorated with patterned weaving, embroidery, lace, red cotton and silk threads. Generally executed in red threads on white linen, the ornamental designs on towels brightened up the walls of wooden huts and enframed the icons hanging in the corner. Geometric motifs tended to dominate in the woven patterns.
