Sergei Sergeyev

Born: 1953, Leningrad

Painter, graphic artist. Born in the family of Alexander Sergeyev in Leningrad (1953). Studied theatrical design at the Vladimir Serov School of Art in Leningrad (1969–73). Engaged in a quest for his own personal style, studying Flemish art and the techniques of tempera painting and etching (1973). Studied at the Vera Mukhina School of Art and Industry in Leningrad (1973–75), before leaving to join the nonconformist movement (1975). Founded the Alypius group and held exhibitions in private apartments (1975–80). Founding member of the Fellowship of Experimental Fine Art (1981–89). Worked on a series of still-lifes and landscapes in the New Romantic style and painted portraits of friends and fellow artists (early 1980s). Worked in the New Wave style and exhibited alongside the New Artists (mid-1980s). Returned to tempera painting, creating a large series entitled Grey Peter, combining still-lifes with urbanscapes to capture the spirit of St Petersburg and the mood of the city (early 1990s). Member of the International Federation of Artists (1995). Launched a major series entitled Palimpsest influenced by the ideas of Victor Samokhvalov (mid-1990s). Subject of an essay by Timur Novikov (2001). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1975).
